I’ve been hanging out at the Brooklyn Vegan/M for Montreal day show’s outdoor tent for a while now. I first saw French Canadian metal icons Voivod, who soldiered through a number of technical difficulties. They play a fairly straightforward style of metal, but I really dug their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.” You’ve got to respect a metal band that appreciates Syd Barrett-era Floyd.
After that was an odd solo set by Andrew WK. Mostly improvising on the piano, he alternated between classical pieces and semi-nonsense Springsteen-style anthems about small dogs and geese. He’s quite the talented pianist, but I’m not sure what else I took away from the set. I figure I’ll stick around for Roky Erickson with Okkervil River.
