Wednesday always seems like a test run of sorts here at SXSW, and so it is that this afternoon has been one of hits and misses.
After an uneventful start at the Fader Fort, I found myself watching Neon Indian’s first show of this year’s festival at Red Seven. The outdoor patio of the venue was jammed for this foremost “chill-wave” band. Their electronic pop, which relies heavily upon an early-90s synth sound, was enough to keep you interested, but it was nothing that demanded a second listen for my ears.
I next intended to catch GZA at Emo’s, but, given the Wedesday haphazardness, the set was cancelled. My internal homing pigeon lead me to Cheer Up Charlie’s (the former Ms. Bea’s), home of many memorable performances at last year’s SXSW.
Today’s afternoon shows at Cheer Up Charlie’s feature bands from Mexico. I arrived during a set by Mexico City’s El Resplandor, whose minimalistic drone seemed perfect for the waning afternoon. Their line-up features only rudimentary drums, guitars, and heavily effected vocals, but the sum is greater than the proverbial parts. Much of the set was an exploration in simple riffs puctuated by haunting screams, but their final song took on a decidedly poppier and cheerful tone, almost like a 21st Century take on Bob Dylan’s “Wigwam”.
Next up is Monterrey’s XYX, and perhaps later tonight I’ll catch Spoon’s showcase at Stubb’s.
